Free video 2: How to add colour to a glaze

Following on from the first free video (https://ferretbookshop.live/free-video-1-how-to-make-a-glaze/), this video shows how to add colouring oxides to your glaze

Important information

Everything is dishwasher and microwave safe, except for the handmade cake stands.

All the handmade pottery is made by Linda in her studio in west London. All the manufactured pottery is made to Linda's designs.

The porcelain clay is mixed in Stoke-on-Trent. It is fired to a high temperature in electric kilns and resists chipping or cracking.
The glazes are made in the studio and contain no lead or cadmium.
Glaze materials: feldspar, quartz, kaolin, calcium carbonate, dolomite, and borax frit from CTM potters supplies. Colourants: small amounts of rutile, copper oxide, nickel oxide, cobalt oxide, and tin oxide.

Aneta Regel bravely pushes her materials to their limits; granite rocks imbedded in the clay start to burst and melt, porcelain slips crack and expose coloured glazes and clays beneath. The insides of the vessels are as exciting as the outsides. We included Aneta’s work in our book Material Matters An Artist’s Guide to Understanding Ceramic Materials.

  • New packaging regulations have made it much more difficult to ship to customers in the EU. In recent years I’ve been making more orders for businesses here in the UK: tea ware for tea importers, tableware for restaurants and lighting for lighting designers. I find I prefer making wholesale orders as then I can spend more time in my studio, less time packing individual orders and less time exhibiting at fairs.

The next three are a magnesium matt with rutile, cobalt and rutile and a colour blend with copper, cobalt, nickel, rutile and chromium and combinations of those five colouring oxides. Matt glazes form during cooling in the kiln when excess magnesium, calcium, alumina and silica form tiny crystals on the surface. Research posted by @tim_thornton_ceramics has found that diopside (magnesium calcium silicate) crystals are more resistant to acid attack than wollastonite (calcium silicate) or anorthite (calcium aluminosilicate) crystals. I’m happy because magnesium matt glazes are my favourite ones that I use on my functional ware. Matt glazes are my favourites. The first two are a calcium matt with rutile and tin for pink and copper oxide for turquoise. The next three are a magnesium matt with rutile, cobalt and rutile and a colour blend with copper, cobalt, nickel, rutile and chromium and combinations of those five colouring oxides. Matt glazes form during cooling in the kiln when excess magnesium, calcium, alumina and silica form tiny crystals on the surface.
